Mel Gibson’s wife Robyn has filed for divorce from the Hollywood star.

Los Angeles Superior Court heard that the Braveheart star’s other half wants to call time on their 28 years together.

Ms Gibson cited irreconcilable differences as the reason she wants to split up from the father of her seven children.

Six of the Gibsons’ offspring are now over the age of 18, but one is ten years old today.

Despite the high-profile nature of Gibson’s career, an official statement from the couple has called for their privacy to be respected during the divorce proceedings.

In a joint announcement, the Gibsons said: "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so."

Over the years, Gibson has made his name with films such as Mad Max, Maverick, Ransom and What Women Want.

He is also set to star in Martin Campbell film Edge of Darkness, which is currently in post production and due for release later this year.
