Kate Winslet is among the favourite to triumph at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards after the nominations were announced.

The UK star won the Best Actress gong at the Oscars this year and will be hoping to add MTV’s Best Female Performance prize at the ceremony later this month.

It will be held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on May 31st and features a number of kooky categories, such as Best Kiss, alongside more traditional awards.

Twilight, the vampire romance which has shot actor Robert Pattinson to stardom, leads the nominations with seven including Best Movie, Best Breakthrough Male and Best Fight.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year, which features Zach Efron, also fared well in the nominations, picking up five, while Slumdog Millionaire received four.

The Dark Knight, Wanted and Iron Man have also been named in numerous categories.

In a twist from most film awards ceremonies, the public chooses the winners at the MTV event, with people able to vote on its website.
