Pop star Madonna has flown home to the UK after failing in her attempt to adopt a second Malawian child.
The singer had been in Africa to find a new member of he family, but was denied due to local legislation.
National laws state that the adopting parent must spend 18 months in the native country of the child they want to adopt before an arrangement can be finalised.
The self-styled Queen of Pop, who adopted David Banda from the country a few years ago, was told the news by judge Esmie Chondo.
"I must have to decline to grant the application to Madonna," he said following a hearing behind closed doors on Friday.
It is not clear if Madonna, who was in Africa with David and 12-year-old daughter Lourdes, will appeal the decision. For now, she will spend time in the UK and the US before making any further move.
