It’s time to roll out the red carpets! The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday and some people will be feeling pretty happy. This year there are two films that seem to be leaders of the pack – Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo’ with 11 nominations and silent film “The Artist”, which is not far behind with 10.

This year, George Clooney for “The Descendant” is the favourite in the Best Actor category, although, he’ll have some stiff competition from Gary Oldman for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”, Demian Bichir for “A Better Life”, George Clooney for “The Descendants, Jean Dujardin for “The Artist” and Brad Pitt for “Moneyball”.

For the Best Actress gong, it seems like it will be a case of Maggie versus Marilyn, as the frontrunners are tipped to be Meryl Streep for her role as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” and Michelle Williams who plays Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn”. However, they’ll have to fight it out with Glenn Close for “Albert Nobbs”, Viola Davis for “The Help” and Rooney Mara for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”.

62-year-old Meryl has scored a record 17th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the former Prime Minister, but as she hasn’t actually won for 29 years since she took home a golden statue for “Sophie’s Choice”, she might well be hoping that this will be her lucky year!
