Women prefer online gambling to some forms of land-based betting, according to an industry body.
A recent study by the Gambling Commission revealed that 6.5 per cent of women in the UK take part in gambling via the internet, digital television or mobile phone.
The figure represents an increase of 1.5 percentage points from two years ago and Brian Wright, business director of the Remote Gambling Association, said it reflects the fact that women feel more comfortable betting via the internet.
He explained: "The products appeal to women a bit more. Online bingo is particularly popular with women, as is poker."
Traditional gambling venues, in particular betting shops, tend to be male-dominated environments and women are not always welcomed warmly, Mr Wright continued.
However, everyone is treated equally online and female players are regarded no differently from men, he added.
