Twitter-Loving New Mum Names Her Baby ‘Hashtag’!

Posted on: November 29th, 2012

baby-hashtag-jameson-twitter.jpgNow I love a bit of social networking – catching up with all my bingo buddies on Facebook and Twitter – but obviously not as much the new mum who named her baby ‘Hashtag’!

The unnamed mother posted the happy news of her baby’s arrival on Facebook, writing, “Hashtag Jameson was born at 10oclock last night. She weys 8pounds and I luv her so much!!!!”

It’s not yet remains clear whether “Hashtag” is the baby’s legal first name or if the post is simply a clever hoax or viral marketing campaign. If it is, it’s certainly done it’s job as it has everyone talking and people have taken to Twitter to discuss their feelings about the name. In fact, little Hashtag already has her own #hashtag at less than a week old!

Twitter user, @cschweitz, wrote, “This is HORRIBLE (and cruel!)”, while @EmmaTofi commented, “Apparently a mother has named her baby ‘Hashtag.’ There are so many reasons why that's horrendous, I just don't know where to start.”

Other tweeters made jokes about the unusual name, with @CliftonFrancis saying, “Wonder if the kid will only be allowed 140 characters when speaking”, @GTLazer writing, “Totally calling my daughter Retweet”, @c_b_1902 adding, “#babyhashtag Her sister dotcom & brother CtrlAltDel are said to be thrilled with their new sister” and @DavidHamilton tweeting, “I'd call my first child Ampersand, or 'And' for short.”

Also some users seemed to be thanking their own parents for making more sensible choices, such as @sben3, who wrote, “Growing up I wished my name wasn't so boring and average, now I think of the baby named ‘Hashtag’ and I think ‘thanks mom, I love you”, while ‏@DadsUpLate tweeted, “Somebody named their baby #Hashtag and now the rest of us can feel better about the decisions we made this year.”

This isn’t the first time that parents have taken inspiration from social media when naming their children, as in February an Egyptian man called his daughter ‘Facebook’. Also in 2011, a couple from Israel, Lior and Vardit Adler, named their baby daughter ‘Like’ after Facebook’s ‘Like’ button! The little girl’s dad, Lior, explained that they were looking for a name that was modern and innovative and said, “If once people gave Biblical names and that was the icon, then today this is one of the most famous icons in the world. In our opinion it’s the modern equivalent of the name Ahava (Love). It’s just my way of saying to my fantastic daughter, ‘Love.’”

Each to their own, I suppose. Let’s just hope little Hashtag gets used to her crazy name!
